The origin of the complex is linked to Sheikh Nasir ad-Din Ubaydullah ibn Mahmud Shashi, known as Khoja Ahrar Vali, a leading religious and political figure of Mawarannahr. The ensemble took shape over a long period, from the 15th to the 20th century.
In the first half of the 17th century, during the rule of the Astrakhan Khanate, the complex was thoroughly rebuilt, which completely changed its original appearance. Further additions were made in the 19th and 20th centuries.
