The present mosque was built on the site of an older mosque and was completed in 1901. Construction was led by Abdukadyr Bakiyev, with master builders Zayniddin and Shamsiddin Gafurov (brothers), Ustad Sa'dulla, Ustad Mahmud and others taking part.
During the Soviet period the building served as a post office. After Uzbekistan gained independence, it was returned to worshippers and underwent a thorough restoration.
