The exact date of construction is not known. A work by Rıfat Osman gives the year 1574. Because the Kadı Bedrettin Mosque, built by Şeyhi Çelebi's father, dates to the 1540s, the mosque is considered likely to have been built towards the end of the 16th century.
During the Balkan War the minaret was destroyed when it was struck by a cannonball. The madrasa section beside the mosque was destroyed during the Russo-Ottoman War of 1877–1878.
