Islam took hold in Ternate in the late fifteenth century. According to the sources, one of the sultanate's rulers began to embrace Islam around 1465–1486, and his son Sultan Zainal Abidin (1486–1500) declared Islam the official religion of the state, established a government based on Islamic law and involved scholars in it.
Our records give 1606 as the year the mosque was built.
