According to the sources, the mosque was built in 1647 during the time of the vizier Mustafa Pasha al-Nisanji.

On Friday 25 July 2014, corresponding to Ramadan 1435 AH, ISIL militants blew up the mosque with explosives. The building was wrecked and its minaret collapsed. The site was reportedly later turned into a parking lot, and the mosque's equipment was looted. Together with attacks on other heritage sites in Mosul, such as the Mosque of the Prophet Jonah, the destruction was seen as an assault on Iraq's shared historical heritage and identity.

After ISIL's defeat, the mosque was rebuilt.
