The mosque was built in 1568 by Murad Pasha, who served as the Ottoman governor of Damascus from 1568 to 1569. It is regarded as an early Ottoman-period mosque and mausoleum in the city. Because it served as a centre for the Naqshbandi Sufi order, it is also called the Naqshbandi Mosque.
