The Grand Mosque of Paris stands at Place du Puits de l'Ermite in the 5th arrondissement, the district that includes the Latin Quarter. It was designed by Maurice Tranchant de Lunel in a Maghrebi architectural style and completed in 1926. The building is a listed historic monument in France and carries the "Patrimoine du XXᵉ siècle" label. It was erected by the French state as a mark of gratitude to the Muslims who fought on France's side in the First World War.

The decision to build a great mosque in Paris was taken on the day after the Battle of Verdun, and 500,000 French francs were set aside for the project. Morocco helped establish an Islamic waqf (endowment) so that construction could be completed.
The mosque was inaugurated on 15 July 1926 by the French president of the time, Doumergue, together with the Moroccan sultan Yusuf ibn al-Hasan.
The war that prompted its construction cost the lives of an estimated 70,000 to 100,000 Muslims serving in the French armies, about 28,000 of them at Verdun.
