The building was completed in 1934 and was previously known as The Rose of Fraternity Lodge.
Some other American mosques are older, but they were either converted from existing buildings or have not survived. The Al-Sadiq Mosque in Chicago (1922) and the Powers Street Mosque in New York City (1931) were adapted from existing structures. The Highland Park Mosque, built in 1921 to serve immigrant workers in the Detroit area, was sold in 1926. A mosque built near Ross, North Dakota, in 1929 fell into ruin, and a smaller mosque was built near the site in 2005 to commemorate its history.
