The building dates to the 9th century. Radiocarbon dating carried out in early 2017, together with historical sources, suggests that it may have been constructed as early as 794. It is said to have been raised on the ruins of a Buddhist monastery.

In 2006 the site was included on the World Monuments Watch of the World Monuments Fund, a list covering more than a hundred endangered sites.
