The Great Mosque of Akre is counted among the old historic mosques of Iraq. According to the sources, it was built after the conquest of Iraq and the spread of Islam, during the caliphate of Umar, in 20 AH (640/641 CE). The complex covers more than 3,000 square metres. Today it serves both worship and teaching: the five daily prayers, Friday prayers and the two Eid prayers are held there, and it houses an official religious school as well as an institute of Islamic sciences that awards a diploma. It is described as drawing visiting scholars and students of religious knowledge.

According to the sources, the mosque was built in 20 AH (640/641 CE), in the time of Caliph Umar. A religious school was added nearby at a later date.

The building has been repaired and renovated several times. The most recent major renovation took place in 1384 AH / 1965 CE under the supervision of the Iraqi Ministry of Awqaf, with help from the people of Akre. Among the scholars who served as imam and preacher at the mosque, Sheikh Ibrahim ibn al-Hajj Muhammad Rashka is mentioned as one of the best known.
