Masjid Bulgar Kazan

Bolğar Mosque stands in Novo-Savinovsk, one of the newer districts of Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan. It was built to mark the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgars and opened in 1993. Its composition is distinctive: volumes of differing heights interlock diagonally, running from southwest to northeast. The complex is built of white brick, which sits in harmony with the surrounding apartment blocks, and specialists describe it as a modern mosque with a rationalist design. Men and women have separate entrances and rooms. The main prayer hall is on the second floor, the women's hall on the first, and the minaret is 35 metres high.

Construction of the Bolğar Mosque began in the early 1990s. The plot set aside for it was a desolate, swampy area, so the first task for the builders was to clear the ground. The architects were Valeriy Voginov and Yevgeni Prokofiev. Much of the building work was overseen by the mosque's first imam, Farooq Hazrat Fazanov, after whom the mosque's madrasah was later named. The mosque opened in 1993, commemorating the 1100th anniversary of the Islamisation of Volga Bulgaria.
