The mosque was built in the early 15th century by Balaban Pasha, who also had a soup kitchen constructed next to it to serve the poor. After his death he was laid to rest in the mosque's cemetery.

The wooden-roofed, single-minaret building collapsed into ruins in the 1920s, and stones from its courtyard were reused for road building. In 1926 the Edirne Directorate of Foundations, by decisions numbered 227 and 241, ordered the building materials sold as rubble, and they fetched 30 lira. The land was offered for sale by decision no. 78 of 28 September 1940 and, by decision no. 88 on 16 December 1940, was sold to Osman Türkkan, the Edirne municipality's warehouse clerk and central tax collector, at 33 kuruş per square metre. The mosque was rebuilt in 2022.
