The complex comprises a mosque, a medrese and the tombs of Zeynel Abidin and his sister Sitti Zeynep, who are known as 13th-generation descendants of the Prophet Muhammad. This Zeynel Abidin should not be confused with Ali ibn Husayn Zayn al-Abidin, who bears the same name. The L-plan building is made of rough stone. The mimbar, mihrab and minaret were added later, and the two tombs stand to the southeast of the mosque.

According to an inscription, the complex was built in 1159 during the Zengid period. The mosque stands on the site of a church dedicated to Saint Febronia of Nisibis, a Christian martyr. The mimbar, mihrab and minaret were later additions to the original structure; the available sources do not give their dates.
