The Parthenon mosque refers to two former mosques created one after the other within the Parthenon, on the Acropolis in central Athens. The first was made in the Ottoman period by adapting the Church of Our Lady of Athens, which occupied the building. The second was a free-standing structure placed in the open space of the naos of the Parthenon, by then a ruin. This second mosque was dismantled in 1843.

During Ottoman rule, the Church of Our Lady of Athens inside the Parthenon was adapted for use as a mosque. The church was destroyed in 1687 by Venetian bombardment during the siege of the Acropolis.

After the Parthenon had fallen into ruin, a separate free-standing mosque was built in the open area of its naos. This second building was dismantled in 1843.

The Parthenon mosque refers to one of two former mosques created successively within the Parthenon, on the Athenian Acropolis, in Central Athens. Erected during the Ottoman period, the first mosque was adapted from the Church of Our Lady of Athens, a church that was destroyed by a Venetian bombardment in 1687. The second mosque was a free-standing building erected in the open space of what was the naos of the now ruined Parthenon; that was dismantled in 1843.
