According to the available sources, construction began while Prince Yıldırım Bayezid served as governor of Kütahya, between 1381 and 1389.
After Bayezid was taken captive at the Battle of Ankara, the building was completed by his son, Prince Musa Çelebi.
The Kütahya pious foundations register (Evkaf Defteri) records the mosque as the Yıldırım Bayezid Han Mosque, while Evliya Çelebi's Seyahatname refers to it as the Orhan Gazi Mosque.
