A mosque already stood on the site in 1822. The present building was commissioned by Carol I, then King of Romania. According to the sources consulted, construction took place between 1910 and 1912. The engineer George (Gogu) Constantinescu and the architect Victor Ștefănescu took part in the planning. The mosque of Konya in Turkey is reported to have served as the model. The structure is built of reinforced concrete. The mosque bears the name of the king who ordered its construction.
