The complex is said to have been founded in 885 AH (around 1480) by Sayf al-Din Qijmas al-Ishaqi, one of the Circassian Mamluk amirs. Over the second half of the 9th century AH (15th century CE) he held a number of senior posts, eventually becoming amir akhur kabir, the official in charge of the sultan's stables, under Sultan Qaytbay.
English-language sources give c. 1481 as the date of completion.
