The Great Mosque of Akre is counted among the old historic mosques of Iraq. According to the sources, it was built after the conquest of Iraq and the spread of Islam, during the caliphate of Umar, in 20 AH (640/641 CE). The complex covers more than 3,000 square metres. Today it serves both worship and teaching: the five daily prayers, Friday prayers and the two Eid prayers are held there, and it houses an official religious school as well as an institute of Islamic sciences that awards a diploma. It is described as drawing visiting scholars and students of religious knowledge.
