The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque stands in the centre of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province in Indonesia, on Jalan Diponegoro in the Kampung Baru area. It was built in an Indo-Gothic architectural style and is recorded as having a capacity of 30,000 worshippers. For the Acehnese people it is a religious, cultural and spiritual symbol, and is also regarded as an emblem of strength, struggle and national identity. The mosque came through the 2004 tsunami with relatively little damage, which added to its symbolic importance for the local community.

The mosque was built in 1879 and was commissioned by the Dutch East Indies authorities. In 2004 the building remained standing after the tsunami that struck the Aceh coast, without suffering catastrophic destruction.
