The Attarine Mosque stands in the historic Attarine district of Alexandria and is counted among the oldest mosques in the city and one of its Islamic landmarks. It takes its name from its proximity to the Attarine market, once among the best-known markets of Alexandria. The mosque is also called the Jayshi Mosque, in reference to Badr al-Jamali, who renovated and enlarged it. The building was originally constructed as a church and was later converted into a mosque.

According to the sources, the building was first constructed in 370 as a church dedicated to Saint Athanasius, a prominent figure of the Coptic Orthodox Church. After Islam reached Egypt, the church was converted into a small mosque.

In 477 AH (1084 CE), the commander Badr al-Jamali renovated, expanded and developed the building. The name Jayshi is attributed to his work on the mosque.

The Attarine Mosque (Arabic: مسجد العطارين), also known as the Al-Juyushi Mosque (Arabic: الجامع الجيوشى) is a mosque located in Alexandria, on the north coast of Egypt. The mosque was built on the site of a former church that was dedicated to Athanasius of Alexandria, and subsequently re-dedicated to Saint Sabbas. The present structure of the mosque dates from the early 20th century, and much of its original foundation has been lost, save for an inscription on a stone which commemorates Badr al-Jamali, one of the renovators of the mosque.
