The New Mosque (Yeni Cami) stands in the Eminönü quarter of Istanbul's Fatih district, close to the Spice Bazaar. It lies almost on the waterfront at the southeastern end of the Golden Horn, at the southern end of the new Galata Bridge. Built in the Ottoman architectural tradition, it is also called the Valide Sultan Mosque and the Pigeon Mosque, though Yeni Cami is the common name. It was called "new" because it replaced a structure ruined by fire. Our records name Davud Ağa as architect and list Safiye Sultan and Turhan Sultan as patrons.

Our records give 1597 as the year of construction and attribute the building to the architect Davud Ağa. According to the sources, the mosque was commissioned by Safiye, wife of Murad III and mother of Mehmed III. Turhan Sultan is also listed as a patron in the record.

The mosque took the name "New" because it was built on the site of a structure ruined by fire. One source gives 1663 as the year of its completion.
