Vienna Islamic Centre

The Vienna Islamic Centre is a mosque in Vienna's 21st district, Floridsdorf, in the Bruckhaufen housing estate at Am Bruckhaufen 3. Sources describe it as the largest mosque in Austria. According to the record it was built in 1979, and its architectural style is given broadly as Islamic architecture. It is regarded as the first successful construction of a representative mosque in Austria.

Several attempts to build a mosque in Austria had been made earlier, under the Habsburg Empire, in the interwar years and in the early postwar period, but they failed for various socioeconomic and political reasons. The last unsuccessful attempt dates from 1949: a mosque was planned for the roughly 1,600 Muslims then living in Austria, and Egypt intended to contribute 8,000,000 schillings toward the estimated cost. Construction was scheduled to begin in 1950.

The Vienna Islamic Centre is the first project of this kind in the country to be carried through successfully. The record gives 1979 as its year of construction.
