Construction began in the Buyid period, most likely in 340 AH (951/952 CE). The mosque was completed in 876 AH (1471/1472 CE). This long building span is reflected in the mix of styles found in the structure.

It was added to the Iran National Heritage List in 1933 and is administered by the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran. In February 2025, Iranian officials considered it, with seven other historic mosques of Fars Province, for a possible UNESCO World Heritage nomination.
