The mosque was founded in 1962.

On 14 March 2002 the Israeli army took over the mosque and used its minaret as a sniping position; four Palestinians were killed in the course of this.

On 22 September 2007, dozens of wives of Hamas-affiliated political prisoners and other women members of Hamas marched from the mosque towards Al-Manara Square, protesting what they regarded as politically motivated detentions of their relatives by the Palestinian Authority. Palestinian Authority security forces dispersed the marchers with tear gas and prevented them from reaching the square.
