The Friday Mosque of Herat stands in the city of Herat, the capital of Herat Province in northwestern Afghanistan. Sources also call it the Great Mosque of Herat or the Jami Masjid of Herat. Built in the Islamic architectural tradition, it is the city's historic congregational mosque. Its foundations date to the Ghurid period, and over the following centuries it was repaired and extended under a succession of ruling dynasties. It took its present form in the final years of the fifteenth century. A large share of its glazed tilework has been renewed in later periods.

The mosque was built by the Ghurids during the reign of Sultan Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad. In later centuries Herat passed to the Timurids, Safavids, Mughals and Uzbeks, and each of these rulers is recorded as having supported the building. Many of its glazed tiles were replaced over time. The mosque's current form dates from the late fifteenth century.
