The mosque was commissioned by the Ottoman sultan Selim I in the name of his mother, Gülbahar Hatun, in Trabzon. The mosque itself carries no inscription giving its date of construction. Based on the epitaph in Gülbahar Hatun's mausoleum, work is thought to have begun around 911 AH (1505–1506) and to have been completed in 1514.
