The mosque is recorded as having been first built in 1380, during the Ming dynasty, and it has undergone restoration in more recent times. The generals Ma Qi and Ma Bufang kept the mosque under their control while serving as military governors of Qinghai.

It was placed on the Qinghai provincial heritage list in 1986 and on the national heritage list (the seventh list) in 2013.

Ma Changqing (1936–2018) served as the mosque's imam for many years. More than three hundred thousand Muslims are reported to have attended his funeral, and he was buried in the Muslim cemetery in Xining.
