It is also known as Masjid al-Wadi, Masjid Atikah, Masjid al-Qubayb and Masjid Banu Salim. The name al-Qubayb is said to come from the locality where it stands. According to local tradition, the Prophet Muhammad and his companions performed their first Friday prayer at this spot on their migration from Mecca to Medina, and the mosque takes its name from that occasion.

According to tradition, the Prophet Muhammad stayed in Quba for four days after arriving there on his hijrah. He then set out toward Medina on a Friday forenoon. The time for the Friday prayer came while he was in this place, where the Banu Salim ibn Awf, a clan of the Ansar, lived. He stopped here and led the Friday prayer with those who accompanied him. This is remembered as the first Friday prayer held after his migration to Medina.
