The building is said to have been constructed in the 5th century as a Byzantine church and monastery. When Kasım Bey of the Dulkadirids took Kadirli in 1489, it was converted into a mosque and madrasa. The Dulkadirids added a mimbar and a minaret.
It was first called Alaüddevle Mescit, after Kasım Bey's father Alaüddevle Bozkurt, and the name was later shortened to Ala. In the 19th century it served as an Ottoman Army depot, and after 1865 it was restored for use as a mosque. It was abandoned in 1924, during the Republican era. A restoration that started in 2012 was finished in July 2020.
