Yatağan Mosque stands on Yatağan Hamamı Sokağı in the Ayvansaray quarter of Istanbul's Fatih district. It is also recorded as the Hacı İlyas Yatağan Mosque and is registered as a cultural asset requiring protection. It has a single minaret with one balcony and a tiled roof. The side walls and the qibla wall are of stone, while the minbar and pulpit are of wood and the mihrab is of marble. The ceiling is covered in timber, and the women's section, also wooden, is on the upper floor. The former last-congregation porch was later enclosed and made part of the prayer hall, so the front facade, with its wood, concrete plaster and plastic windows, no longer reflects the original design. The courtyard also holds an aging plane tree.

History

The building was commissioned during the reign of Mehmed II by Hacı İlyas Ağa, the chief of artillery (topçubaşı), as a small mosque (mescit). In 1598, under Mehmed III, a minbar was added and it became a full mosque.

The name "Yatağan" is linked to Yatağâni Dede. During the reign of Süleyman II a fountain was built near the mosque in his name, and he was buried in the mosque's graveyard. The grave of Hacı İlyas Ağa lies to the right of the building, and that of Yatağan Dede just to the right of the minaret.

From Wikipedia

Hacı İlyas Yatağan Camii, İstanbul ili Fatih ilçesi Ayvansaray mahallesinde bulunan II. Mehmed döneminde inşa edilen camidir. II.Mehmed'in Topçubaşısı Hacı İlyas Ağa tarafından mescit olarak yaptırıldı. II.
