Umm al-Qura Mosque is a large Sunni mosque in Baghdad, Iraq, on the Karkh side of the city. Completed in 2001, it counts among the big modern mosques of Iraq. Its name, meaning "Mother of Cities", is an epithet of Mecca and also recalls a phrase in the Quran (6:92). Sources describe it as the largest mosque in Baghdad and as the centre of the city's mosque administration. Today the mosque hosts the five daily prayers, the Friday prayer and the Eid prayers.

History

This text was compiled from sourced information with AI assistance and has not yet been reviewed by an editor. Please report any errors.

Construction of the mosque began in late 1999, during the rule of Saddam Hussein. It was completed in April 2001, at a reported cost of about 7.5 million US dollars.

It was first known as Umm al-Maarik ("Mother of All Battles"), the official Iraqi name for the Second Gulf War. After the American-led invasion of 2003 it was renamed Umm al-Qura and became the headquarters of the Association of Muslim Scholars. In 2012 the buildings were occupied by the presidency of the Sunni Endowment Diwan.

From Wikipedia

The Umm al-Qura Mosque (Arabic: جامع أم القرى, lit. 'Mother of All Cities'), also known as the Umm al-Ma'arik Mosque (lit. 'Mother of All Battles'), is a Sunni mosque located in Baghdad, in the Baghdad Governorate of Iraq. It was the city's largest place of worship for Sunnis, but it has also become the location of a Shi'a hawza and a place of refuge for many fleeing the terrorists' depredations in the Anbar Province. It was designed to commemorate former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's self-proclaimed victory in the Gulf War (1990–1991) and was intended to serve as a personal tribute to Saddam himself. It is located in the Sunni-populated al-Adel area of western Baghdad.

Although never confirmed by the regime or himself during his lifetime, there was speculation that it was intended to have been Saddam's final resting place.
