The Sabancı Merkez Mosque is a large mosque in central Adana, on the banks of the Seyhan River. It was designed by the architect Necip Dinç and opened in 1998. Our records give its capacity as 28,500 worshippers. The building has five domes and six minarets. The four minarets around the central dome are 99 metres tall, while the two at the rear are 75 metres. The largest dome is 32 metres in diameter and 54 metres high. Its exterior is said to recall the Sultan Ahmed Mosque and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, and its interior the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne.

History

The mosque was opened in 1998 to the design of the architect Necip Dinç. Half of the construction cost was met by donations from the public and the other half by the industrialist Sabancı family.

From Wikipedia

Sabancı Merkez Mosque or Sabancı Central Mosque (Turkish: Sabancı Merkez Camii) in Adana is the second largest mosque in Turkey. The exterior of the mosque (and its interior decoration) is similar to the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, though it has six minarets, similar to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque) in Istanbul.

The mosque, which went into service in 1998, was constructed upon a confiscated Armenian cemetery. It is built on a total of 52,600 square metres (566,000 square feet) of land and has a closed area of 6,600 square metres (71,000 square feet).

Sabancı Central Mosque was built jointly by Turkish Religious Foundation and Sabanci Foundation. The proprietorship of the mosque belongs to Adana Religious Affairs Foundation and its usage rights have been transferred to Adana Provincial Office of Mufti.
