History

This text was compiled from sourced information with AI assistance and has not yet been reviewed by an editor. Please report any errors.

Construction of the mosque began in 1583 but was never completed, because of a dispute between the Sultan of Pattani and his brother. The structure seen today dates from the 18th century.

The mosque also became internationally known because of events on 28 April 2004. After attacks on security posts, a group of suspected militants took refuge inside, and the Thai military stormed the building following a siege of about seven hours. Thirty-two people died. A government commission later concluded that the military had overreacted.
