Kocatepe Mosque is located in the Kültür neighbourhood of Ankara's Çankaya district, in the Kocatepe quarter south of the old town. It is described as the largest mosque in the Turkish capital. The building is modelled on classical Ottoman mosques and is marked by four minarets and a large central dome. Our records name Hüsrev Tayla and Fatin Uluengin as its architects. A modern shopping centre occupies the lower level, and the rent it generates helps finance the mosque.

Construction began in 1967 on the basis of plans by the architect Vedat Dalokay for a modern mosque. These plans were later abandoned in favour of a classical-style design by Hüsrev Tayla, and the mosque was completed in 1987.
