Mosque Maryam stands at 7351 South Stony Island Avenue in the South Shore neighbourhood of Chicago, Illinois. It is the principal mosque of the Nation of Islam movement and is also known as Temple No. 2. It is named after Mary, the mother of Jesus (Maryam in Arabic). The building was originally a Greek Orthodox church dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen. The original church pews are still in use. The Muhammad University of Islam stands next to the mosque, and the building also houses the headquarters of the movement's leader, Louis Farrakhan.

Geschichte

The building first served as the Greek Orthodox Church of Saints Constantine and Helen, whose congregation later moved to the suburb of Palos Hills. Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Nation of Islam, purchased the property in 1972, and it became a mosque. According to the Arabic source, Louis Farrakhan bought the building again 16 years later, in 1988.

Farrakhan has stated that the former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi lent Elijah Muhammad 3 million dollars to convert the former church into a mosque. This is reported as Farrakhan's own claim.
