The Al-Aqsa Mosque, in the sense of this entry, is the roofed main prayer hall at the southern end of the Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem, facing the qibla. This position gives it its Arabic name, al-Qibli Prayer Hall. A lead-covered dome rises above the building, which measures roughly 80 metres in length and 55 metres in width. Its interior rests on 53 marble columns and 49 square piers, and it has 11 doors. Its capacity is about 5,000 worshippers. Built in the Islamic architectural tradition, it lies within the World Heritage site of the Old City of Jerusalem. The name Al-Aqsa Mosque is also used for the entire compound within the walls, which includes open courtyards, the Dome of the Rock and many other structures.
