Construction began in 1187 AH (1773) and was completed in 1188 AH (1774). The founder, Muhammad Bey, was a follower of Ali Bey al-Kabir, one of the emirs of Egypt. Ali Bey had bought him in 1761 (1175 AH) and later granted him the rank of emir.

The name Abu al-Dhahab means "father of gold". According to the account, he earned it because he scattered gold among the poor on his way home after being invested with a robe of honour at the Citadel. His standing grew quickly, and he eventually held the emirate of Egypt alone.
